Botchwey committee denies recommending replacement of Mahama for 2020

The post-election committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, has denied recommending that former President John Dramani Mahama be replaced as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2020 election.

It would be recalled that there had been media reports that the committee had recommended that Mahama should not be allowed to lead the party to the next election since he lost the 2016 election because he was seen as corrupt while President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, his challenger, was seen as incorruptible by Ghanaians.

However, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Kwesi Botchwey, while presenting the 455 page report of the committee on Monday, denied the report, insisting that the mandate of the committee did not cover who leads the party to the 2020 election.

“It was not part of our mandate as a committee to recommend who should or should not stand as the party’s candidate in 2020, so, we didn’t recommend any such thing; not for former President Mahama or anybody else. It simply was not part of our mandate,” he told Class FM.

The committee was mandated to investigate the party’s woeful performance in the 2016 elections, and also make recommendations for the restructuring and reorganisation of the party ahead of the 2020 election.
